Bhubaneswar: A Special Vigilance Court in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday ordered the confiscation of Rs 2.5 crore worth of properties of a former executive engineer of Rural Works division in Umarkote, Simadri Nayak, convicted for amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

According to a Vigilance release, the immovable assets include a multi-storeyed building in Rayagada, two buildings in Nabarangpur and three plots – one in Rayagada town and two in Nabarangpur town. The movable assets include bank deposits and gold ornaments.
On December 11, 2023, the retired engineer and his wife Laxmi Nayak were convicted by a Special Court in Bhubaneswar for possessing disproportionate assets of Rs 38.40 lakh and were jailed for three and two years, respectively.
The Odisha Vigilance had charged them under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and Section 109 of the IPC. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 10 lakh on Nayak and Rs 2 lakh on his wife. In case of a default, they were to undergo an additional rigorous imprisonment of six and three months, respectively.
The court subsequently ordered the confiscation of the identified properties in accordance with legal provisions.
