Bhubaneswar: The Crime Branch of Odisha Police stepped up its investigation into the death of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College student Soumyashree Bisi on Thursday as its team questioned a key eyewitness in the case.
Sources said a two-member team of the Crime Branch visited the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack and interrogated a key eyewitness currently undergoing treatment there.
The team members reportedly visited the Plastic Surgery Department of the hospital and interrogated key eyewitness Jyotiprakash Biswal, who is currently undergoing treatment in the Burn Unit.
The CB officials reportedly questioned Jyotiprakash about the sequence of events that led to the tragic incident, including how the victim’s body caught fire. The Crime Branch aimed to gather firsthand information to piece together the exact details of the tragic incident that took place on the FM College campus at Balasore on July 12.
Besides questioning Jyotiprakash, the team members also spoke to the doctors treating him to understand the medical aspects of his condition and injuries.
The interrogation lasted for over an hour as the Crime Branch attempted to obtain vital details from Jyotiprakash, and his statement is expected to play a crucial role in the ongoing investigation.
It may be noted that Jyotiprakash risked his life while trying to save the FM College female student after she set herself ablaze. He also sustained serious burns on his hands, face, and lungs while trying to save Soumyashree.
Meanwhile, a Crime Branch team, led by DSP Iman Kalyan Nayak, also visited the Fakir Mohan College in Balasore as part of the ongoing investigation into the tragic incident.
Earlier, the Balasore Police had arrested two persons – Samira Kumar Sahu, suspended Head of the Education Department, and Dillip Ghose, suspended principal of FM College. They have been booked under various sections, including those related to abetment, criminal intimidation, sexual harassment, stalking, and insulting the modesty of a woman.
