Berhampur: A Special Vigilance Court in Phulbani on Friday sentenced the Medical Officer of Talcher Sub-Divisional Hospital, Nisith Nisanth Malu, to three years of rigorous imprisonment in a bribery case.
Malu was trapped by Odisha vigilance sleuths on March 31, 2021, while taking a bribe of Rs 7,000 from an employee of the Phiringia CMC to clear his bills. He was then posted as in-charge of the hospital.
Judge Samar Bilash Behera also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him. He has to serve additional three months of rigorous imprisonment in case default in payment of the fine.
“The court convicted the accused after examining 12 witnesses and verifying the relevant documents,” special public prosecutor V Ram Dash told the media.
His bail application, however, was accepted and he was later released, he added.
