Odisha Elections 2024: BJP’s MLA Candidate Assaulted During Polling In Nabarangpur
Bhubaneswar: In another incident of violence during first phase of polling in Odisha on Monday, a BJP candidate was allegedly assaulted by some miscreants.
According to sources, while the polling was going, BJP’s MLA candidate for Jharigaon Assembly segment under Nabarangpur Lok Sabha constituency Narsingh Bhatra came to know that some miscreants were creating disturbances in an attempt to capture a booth.
He along with his supporters rushed to Deulakana village under the constituency and spread out to different polling booths. While Bhatra was checking booth 204, the miscreants attacked him, the sources said.
Bhatra, who sustained injuries in the assault, filed a complaint regarding the incident at local police station.
Later, Bhatra told media persons that he did not recognise the attackers but they raised slogans in favour of BJD. “The miscreants, who were in inebriated condition, first scolded me in foul language and then assaulted me. They also snatched my gold chain and voter I-card,” he added.
Besides Bhatra, Nabarangpur MP and BJD candidate Ramesh Chandra Majhi and Herabati Gond of Congress are contesting the election from Jharigaon.
Earlier in the day, supporters of BJP and BJD clashed when polling was underway in Chikiti Assembly segment in Ganjam district.
The violence took place after BJD supporters allegedly stopped a BJP agent from entering a polling booth. Two persons sustained injuries during the violent incident in which sticks were used, sources said.
