Bhubaneswar: The farmers have been allowed one more day to apply for compensation for crop loss due to recent unseasonal rain from Odisha government.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced this at a press meet on Sunday after a visit to the areas affected by the rain in Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapatis districts to take stock of situation at ground level.

He said the farmers can apply for the compensation from the government for their crop loss by December 31. Earlier, the government had announced that it would identity the affected farmers by December 30.

The Chief Minister said 37,800 hectare of kharif crop and 822 hectare of vegetables in Ganjam district had been damaged by the winter rain.

The government had also assigned deputy chief minister and Agriculture minister KV Singh Deo to visit Cuttack and Jagatsingpur districts, Women and Child Development minister Pravati Parida to Bhadrak and Balasore, Food Supply minister Krushna Chandra Patra to Kendrapada and Jajpur, and Cooperation minister Pradeep Bal Samant to Khurda district to assess the crop damage.

The Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment Department asked the farmers to inform about the crop damage through ‘Krishi Rakshak’ App. They can also lodge their grievance related to farming on 14447 toll free number.

The government has announced that the farmers would be paid compensation for damage to betel leaf and vegetables besides paddy.

It may be noted that several districts in the state received heavy rain in two phases between December 20 and 28 rendering extensive damage to the crops.
