Odisha Govt Imposes 2-Month Fishing Ban Along Sea Coast

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Thursday imposed 2-month ban on fishing in sea along the state’s coast.

In an official letter, the Directorate of Fisheries at Cuttack stated that as per the provisions of of the Orissa Marine Fishing Regulation Act-1982, the state government prohibits fishing within territorial waters along the entire coastline of Odisha by all the fishing vessels except traditional fishing crafts (upto 8.5 metre) with or without engine from April 15 to June 14 for 61 days.

The ban on sea fishing has been imposed for conservation and effective management of fisheries resources and also for sea safety reasons, it added.

The Directorate directed the additional fisheries officers of Ganjam, Kujang, Balasore and Puri and district fisheries officer of Balugaon to inform all stakeholders to follow the notification meticulously during the period. Necessary steps may be taken to make marine fishermen aware of the uniform ban along Odisha coast, it added.
