Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government will meet the additional funds required for the proposed Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Jatni from the state budget.
The decision was taken as a policy measure by the state government under the direction of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, a CMO release said on Wednesday.
The hospital is being established under the Department of Atomic Energy of the Government of India on the lines of the renowned Tata Memorial Centre. Its bed strength, initially fixed at 200, has since been raised to 385, leading to an upward revision in the estimated construction cost.
While the Tata Steel Foundation is also contributing funds, Chief Minister Majhi has decided that the Odisha government will bear any additional expenditure required. The extra funds will be utilised to expand bed capacity and provide other infrastructure and equipment.
A large number of Odia patients currently travel to Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai for treatment every day. Once the facility comes up in Jatni, it will benefit not only patients from Odisha but also cancer patients across eastern India, the release added.
