Odisha Govt To Suspend Driving Licence For These Traffic Violations

Bhubaneswar: Commerce and Transport minister Padmanabha Behera on Thursday said that driving licence of traffic rules violators  will be suspended as per the directive of the Supreme Court.

“Pursuant to the directive of the Supreme Court, we have strictly enforced the traffic rules under the new Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act, 2019, in Odisha from January 1 in which the driving licence of the defaulters will be suspended,” he added.

The Minister said that the Transport Commissioner has directed all Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) to suspend driving licence of people if they are found violating these traffic rules:
—Driving beyond the specified speed limit
—Jumping the red light
—Carrying overload in goods carriages
—Carrying persons in goods carriages
—Driving vehicles under the influence of liquor and drugs
—Using mobile phones while driving a vehicle.

Behera said that the Supreme Court has directed the Transport Commissioners across the country to apprise it of cancellation of driving licence in every three months.

He further informed that e-challans were issued against 334 persons for drunken driving till September last year. Besides, the police had sent a list of 496 persons to the RTOs for suspension of their driving licence.

Going by the data available in the Sarathi database, only 126 driving licences have been suspended so far and the Transport Commissioner has sought a reply from the RTOs concerned, the Minister added.
