Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday hailed the noble gesture by the bereaved family of Priyankarani Patra (26) for donating her kidney to save the lives of two patients.
Expressing his gratitude, the CM also announced free treatment for the deceased’s 3-year-old daughter, who is critically injured and admitted in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
Naveen also thanked the doctors of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for successfully conducting the cadaveric kidney transplant on a critical male patient.
Notably, Priyankarani and her daughter Siddhi from Digapahandi in Ganjam district were critically injured in a road accident at Kureisuni temple near Ganianala Chhak on the Digapahandi-Berhampur highway on January 26. They were admitted to Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar. A week later, however, the doctors declared Priyankarani as brain dead on February 3.
Later, the woman’s husband V Sameer Raju and father-in-law V Dharma Raju expressed their desire to donate her vital organs.
The hospital authorities immediately contacted the state Health Department, which deputed a special team from SCB Medical College and Hospital to Apollo Hospital. The team removed one kidney around midnight. The kidney was later taken to SCB and transplanted on a male patient by an expert team after a seven-hour surgery.
On the other hand, another team of doctors in Apollo Hospital removed the other kidney and conducted the cadaveric transplant on a 45-year-old male patient, Ghanashyam Jena, on Monday night.
