Sambalpur: Bharatiya janata Party (BJP) MLA from Samablpur Jayanarayan Mishra has landed in a soup again with a case registered against him for allegedly abusing and threatening a police officer in Odisha’s Sambalpur town.
Sambalpur Town Police Station IIC Subrat Kumar Meher is the complainant and the FIR has been registered against Jayanarayan under Sections 296/351(3)/351(4)/221 of BNS.
According to the complaint, Meher received a phone call from the BJP MLA at 8.53 am on April 3 when he along with other police officers, including SI Ashish Kumar Pradhan and ASI Padmanav Purohit, were discussing the upcoming Hanuman Jayanti celebration. The legislator asked about a sword seizure case and threatened to burn down the police station.
This pertains to April 2 Jhanda Yatra, which was allegedly carried out from Dalaipada to Peerbaba Chowk via Kunjelpada Chhak in Sambalpur town without the permission of the authority concerned. On the occasion, the participants were seen dangerously wielding the weapon in the air. Following which, a case was registered under Sections 189(2)/189(4)/190/125 of BNS r/w Section 25 of Arms Act and two swords were seized.
During the conversation, Jayanarayan also allegedly abused the IIC and threatened to shoot him and all police officials at the police station while accusing them of working for the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
The IIC recorded the entire conversation on his mobile phone for evidence against the legislator. “He obstructed a public servant from discharging duty,” Meher alleged in the complaint.
A probe was ordered into the allegation after the complainant reported the matter to higher authority in the department.
The Sambalpur MLA was earlier booked in 2023 over allegations of outraging modesty of a woman police inspector and obstructing her from discharging duty following a scuffle between them during a protest over murder of the then health minister Naba Kishore Das outside Sambalpur collectorate.
