Balangir: A man allegedly died by suicide in Odisha’s Balangir district on Wednesday after losing a huge sum of money in a share market investment scheme.
The deceased, identified as Vinod Kumar Yadav of Gandhala village under Sindhekela police, took the extreme step after being duped by a Delhi-based broker, sources said.
Yadav had given Rs 20 lakh to the broker, identified as Om Prakash, after he allegedly promised to multiply the invested amount. Out of the total amount, he had borrowed Rs 10 lakh from his friends and relatives.
There are conflicting reports on the circumstances leading to his death. While some reports suggested that Vinod had collected a cheque in Delhi and consumed poison after it bounced back, others said that he tried to contact the accused broker several times but failed to get any response and committed suicide while returning from the national capital, having failed to meet him.
“Under severe mental stress over the loss and repayment of the borrowed amount, he chose to die by suicide,” his family members told the media.
Though Vinod was rushed to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital, he succumbed while undergoing treatment.
Police have seized the body for postmortem and initiated a probe into the incident.
