Jajipur: A 24-year-old man from Kolathala village in Odisha’s Jajpur district allegedly died by suicide after his long-term girlfriend backed out of marriage plans following her appointment as a government high school teacher.
The deceased, identified as Chaturbhuj Das, had reportedly been in a relationship with the woman—also from the same village—for nearly 14 years. His family claimed he supported her education and career aspirations, even putting aside his own pursuits, and also financed her studies.
According to sources, Chaturbhuj drank poison in desperation after the woman allegedly distanced herself from him and rejected his marriage proposal. They had planned to get engaged this December.
He was initially taken to Madhuban CHC, then shifted to SCB Medical College in Cuttack, and a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, where he succumbed.
Chaturbhuj’s father has lodged a complaint alleging that the woman and her family mentally harassed and emotionally manipulated him, forcing him to take the extreme step.
