Bhubaneswar: Members of Odisha Motor Vehicle Drivers’ Association on Monday staged a dharna at Baramunda bus stand here demanding compensation for losses incurred by them due to the lockdown imposed in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic and insurance coverage of Rs 50 lakh.

One of the protestors said, “Our livelihood is under threat because of the complete lockdown. We had appealed to the state government for financial assistance. As the government did not take any step, we are forced to stage the protest to press our  demands.”

Congress leader Sura Routray, who joined the protesters, said around 25,000 buses plying in Odisha engage more than one lakh people including the drivers, cleaners, conductors and helpers. They also do the service to the state by transporting medicines, carrying migrants and delivering food. But the government failed to take care of them during the lockdown, he alleged.

Later speaking to media, Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera said the demands of the association are under consideration. “Insurance coverage is necessary for them. Decision will be taken keeping in view the financial condition of the state,” he added.
