Odisha Omicron Tally Surges To 75

Bhubaneswar: The Omicron tally in Odisha touched 75 with 14 more cases being detected on Saturday.

The details of the cases are yet to be shared by Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Bhubaneswar. The variant has spread to all districts of the state.

Notably, 24 of 218 samples sent for genome sequencing had tested positive for this variant of COVID on Wednesday. Five among them had international travel history, while the remaining 19 were local contacts, ILS director Ajay Parida had informed.

Of the 23 cases detected earlier, seven cases were from Keonjhar district, four from Khurda, three each from Puri and Sambalpur, two each from Boudh and Angul and one each from Jagatsinghpur and Balasore.

On December 21 two cases of Omicron were detected in Odisha for the first time, another two were detected on December 23, four on December 26, one on December 29, five on December 30 and 23 on January 2.

Meanwhile, five patients have recovered from the infection. A woman and her two daughters, who had tested positive for Omicron after returning from Nigeria, were discharged from SUM COVID Hospital here on Tuesday after 14-day treatment.

Notably, Odisha has been witnessing a sudden spike in COVID cases since January 5.

After a gap of almost 5 months, the daily COVID caseload in Odisha breached the 1000-mark on January 5 with 1,216 people testing positive for the virus. Cases have spiralled since then with 1,897 on January 6, 2,703 on January 7 and 3,679 on January 8.

The test positivity rate has also gone up from 1.13 per cent on January 4 to 5.51 per cent on January 8.
