Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance sleuths on Sunday arrested Bijaya Kumar Barik, Inspector in Charge (IIC) of CRRI Police Station in Cuttack, for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 40,000 from a licensed liquor vendor.
Vigilance said in a statement that Barik was nabbed at Rajmahal Chhak in Bhubaneswar while allegedly taking bribe from the liquor vendor. The money was demanded to allow the vendor to run his business without interference.
The entire tainted amount of Rs 40,000 was recovered from the possession of the accused officer and seized on the spot. The operation was carried out after the complainant approached the agency with allegations of repeated demand for illegal gratification.
Following the trap, simultaneous searches were launched at two locations linked to the accused officer. These searches were conducted to verify possible accumulation of disproportionate assets, officials said.
The searches were conducted at the residential government quarter of Barik at Unit-1, Bhubaneswar and his office chamber. During house searches;
1.Cash of Rs.4,96,120/- has been unearthed & seized from residential Govt. quarter of Barik, IIC at Unit-1, Bhubaneswar (picture given below).
2.Triple storeyed building at Sisupalagarh, Bhubaneswar
3.Newly constructed double storeyed building at his native village Derabis, Kendrapada
4.Costly wrist watches
Barik was arrested and forwarded to the Court. In this connection, a case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
Vigilance said Barik entered government service on September 21, 2012 as Sun-Inspector of Police and worked in the capacity of SI in different Police Stations in Boudh district from January-2014 to February-2019. From March-2019, he was promoted to the rank of IIC and posted at Nayapali Police Station in Bhubaneswar. Then, he worked as IIC from November-2021 under Police Commissionerate. From February-2024, he has been working as IIC, CRRI, Cuttack and is continuing as such till date.
