Cuttack: A day after an engineering student was rescued from falling into online game Blue Whale Challenge death trap in the city, DGP R P Sharma on Wednesday issued detailed guidelines for police as well as parents and teachers to check the menace.
A review of case studies related to the online game also known as ‘A silent House’, ‘A Sea Of Whale’ and ‘Wake Me Up At 4.20am’ revealed that those who take up the challenge stop interacting with family and friends, talk about running away from home or even death and also change eating and sleeping habits.
The DGP has directed police officials to conduct frequent raids on cyber cafes to check any link/website related to such lethal online games and remove these from the computers. He also advised parents to learn internet tools to keep abreast with the new online trends.
The Blue Whale Challenge includes a set of 50 disturbing tasks and at least six teen suicides in India have been linked to it, though police have found no evidence of such a connection.
On August 14, Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi wrote to IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad to remove Blue Whale links from websites. The Delhi High Court on August 22 had sought response from social media companies on removing links of the challenge. NASSCOM, the IT lobby, has requested the central government to set up a hotline to receive tip-offs on the game. While Kerala banned the game on August 12, Children Protection Commission in Haryana has issued an advisory to schools to educate kids about the risks of the game. An association of ICSE schools in West Bengal is running an awareness campaign.
