Bhubaneswar: Odisha is sixth in the country when in comes to ‘love failure’ suicides. Failed relationship has had youths hang self or jump before speeding trains in the state.
According to National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) latest report, Odisha saw 341 suicide cases (144- girls and 197-boys) in 2016 and the number jumped to 389 in 2017. Of them, 174 were girls and 215 were boys.
Most of these cases were reported from Khurda, Balasore and Kendrapara.
West Bengal topped the list in such cases of suicide in India, followed by Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra in the fifth position.
The national figures in 2016 and 2017 were 4,579 and 4,782 respectively.
Likewise, Odisha occupied ninth position for suicide related to illicit relationships.
There has been a rise in cases of suicide due to extramarital affairs in the country. While the all-India figure was 983 in 2016, 39 cases (11-men and 28-women) were reported from Odisha that year. In 2017, the state saw 42 suicides for this reason with 16 among them being men and 26 women against India’s figure of 1,064.
