Rourkela: A rape accused, who had fled from police custody about a month back, was nabbed by Rourkela police on Thursday.
Police also arrested one of his accomplice, who had helped him in escaping from police custody, during a medical check-up. The two have been identified as Kishore Das alias Jata and his accomplice Jyoti Ranjan Rout alias Chikun.
Police said a woman had lodged a complaint at Chhend police station alleging that a man has been forcibly keeping physical relationship with her by threatening her of dire consequences.
Police registered a case and nabbed Das of Chhend area on June 19. The same day he was sent for medical examination to Rourkela Government Hospital, along with three escorts. During this time, Das had asked the escorts to allow him to go to washroom and ran out of the hospital. He fled with a accomplice on a Bullet who was waiting outside.
Soon after, police formed two teams and raids were conducted at multiple locations to nab him but he remained elusive.
On a tip-off that Das was hiding in rural area of Puri district, two police teams from Rourkela reached the town on Wednesday and nabbed him along with his accomplice, with the support of Puri police.
Earlier, police had arrested four others for their involvement in his escape, said Santa Nutan Samad, Panposh SDPO. “With the support of Puri police, two of our police teams nabbed accused Das and Chikun on Wednesday,” said Samad.
Das has previous crime records and as many as 10 criminal cases have been registered against him in Chhend police station, said Samad and added that a Scorpio and three two wheelers, including a bullet have been recovered from him.
