Bhubaneswar: With temperatures rising across Odisha, the state government has decided to introduce morning classes in schools during the summer season for the safety of students.
Announcing this on Saturday, School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond said the exact date for implementation of morning classes will be finalised soon. The matter is to be discussed at a high-level meeting with the Revenue and Disaster Management Department.
The move comes as part of precautionary measures to minimise students’ exposure to extreme heat. Last year, morning classes across the state had commenced from April 2 due to an early onset of heatwave.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that maximum temperatures in the state are expected to dip by 2–3°C over the next few days, before rising again gradually by a similar margin across various districts.
The move to start morning classes assumes significance amid warnings from scientists that India could face severe heatwave conditions in 2026.
