Bhubaneswar: With northwesterly/northerly dry and cold wind at lower levels penetrating Odisha, isolated cold wave to severe cold wave with isolated cold day conditions very likely over some parts of the interior and adjoining coastal districts of Odisha during next 2-3 days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.

According to SOA’s Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC), the prevailing moderate to severe cold wave conditions over Odisha will continue for the next 48 hours.

The state is likely to witness a slight rise in night temperature from December 24, it added.

“The current spell of cold wave was caused by the northwesterly wind flow at lower and upper atmosphere from the colder region of northwest India which was accompanied by clear sky conditions which supported strong radiational cooling,” CEC Director Dr. Sarat Chandra Sahu, said.

Moisture was minimum over land areas due to the force of the northwesterly wind up to the Bay of Bengal, which had prevented incursion of sea wind towards the land.

There would be a slight rise in night temperature ranging from 1 to 2 degrees Celcius in the state due to change in wind flow along with the approach of a western disturbance in northwest India from December 24, Sahu added.

An increase of the night temperature will be more prominent from December 26 with the occurrence of fog over coastal and adjoining interior districts while the west and north Odisha districts might witness light to moderate rainfall on December 29 and 30.

North Odisha and coastal districts might receive rain on December 30 and 31 due to western disturbance, he said adding the new year’s day might be pleasant with cloud cover and occasional sunshine.

The MeT office has issued Orange warning for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Balangir during the next 12 hours and Yellow warning for Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Angul, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Nuapada, Kandhamal and Nabarangpur during this period.

The MeT office has also forecast isolated cold wave conditions in Angul, Sonepur, Boudh, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Cuttack and Khurda from 8.30 am on Wednesday to 8.30 am on Thursday.

Similar weather conditions will prevail in Kalahandi, Balangir, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, in the subsequent 24 hours.

Notably, Daringbadi recorded the season’s lowest temperature at 3.5 degree Celsius on Monday night. The mercury dropped below 10 degree Celsius at 19 places in the state.
