Bhubaneswar: After a brief respite, cold wave tightened its grip over most parts of Odisha on Wednesday with the minimum temperature dropping below 10 degrees Celsius in at least 17 places in the state.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Phulbani in Kandhamal turned out to be the coldest place in the state, recording a minimum temperature of 5 degrees Celsius. It was closely followed by Rourkela at 5.1 degrees Celsius, while Jharsuguda shivered at 5.4 degrees Celsius.
The minimum temperatures in places like Daringibadi, Keonjhar, Sundargarh and Bhawanipatna hovered between 7 and 8 degrees Celsius.
Dry and cold air continued to sweep across the state, while interior parts recorded sharp fall in night temperatures.
The minimum temperature dropped sharply to 9.6 degrees Celsius in Cuttack.
In state capital Bhubaneswar, the minimum temperature plunged to 10.2 degrees Celsius. It was the coldest night of the ongoing winter season in Bhubaneswar as the city experienced 7.2 degrees fall in temperature in three days.
Data showed a steep decline in night temperature over the past three days. On January 4, Bhubaneswar recorded a minimum temperature of 18.6 degrees Celsius. It fell slightly to 18 degrees on January 5, dropped further to 15.4 degrees on January 6, and plunged to 10.2 degrees on January 7. In total, the mercury dipped by 8.4 degrees Celsius within just three days.
Earlier this winter, the lowest temperature was recorded at 11.8 degrees Celsius on December 11, 2025.
