Odisha SP urges Prabhu to rename Khurda Road Junction after Buxi Jagabandhu
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha unit of Samajwadi Party has urged Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu to rename Khurda Road Railway Junction after Buxi Jagabandhu to honour the leader of the Paika uprising against the British imperialism as the country celebrates the bi-centenary year of the revolution.
Drawing parallel to Uttar Pradesh’s recent request to rename Mugolsarai Railway Junction as Deen Dayal Upadhyay on his Birth Centenary year, President of Samajwadi Party Odisha State Committee Rabi Behera said, “We hope the Railway Minister would consider our request to honour the freedom fighter of Odisha.”
He also requested all MPs from Odisha to take up the issue with the Railway Minister.
In March, Chief minister Naveen Patnaik had requested the Centre to run an express train from Odisha in the name of Buxi Jagabandhu, who led the agitation against British force in 1817.
“The Paikas fought relentlessly against the British in 1817 much before the sepoy mutiny in 1857. The people of Odisha still remember Buxi Jagabandhu with reverence and awe. His indefatigable courage, leadership, war strategy, patriotism and sacrifice have made him a legend of my state,” Naveen stated in the letter.
The chief minister had also requested the Union Minister to introduce a Humsafar-type new air-conditioned express train from Khurda Road Railway Junction, the epicenter of the Paika rebellion, to Mumbai.
