Bhubaneswar: With a low-pressure area likely to form over Gangetic West Bengal during the next 24 hours, the Odisha government on Thursday advised fishermen no to venture into sea till August 17.
The office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has sent a letter to the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development department and Collectors of Ganjam, Puri, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak and Balasore districts in this regard.
It said as per the bulletin issued by India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic circulation over South Bangladesh & adjoining Gangetic West Bengal extending up to 4.5 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height persists.
Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over Gangetic West Bengal during next 24 hours. Under the influence of anticipated low-pressure area and strong monsoon current, squally weather with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40 kmph to 50 kmph very likely during August 16 and over North West Bay of Bengal, it said.
In this connection, the fishermen have advised not to venture into north west Bay of Bengal during August 16 and 17, it said. Fishermen out at sea have been advised to return to the coast.
Notably, the weather agency has warned of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning in several districts of Odisha till 8.30 am on Friday (August 16).
Heavy rain may lash one or two places in Bhadrak, Balasore Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Nayagarh, Puri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nabarngpur, Koraput, and Malkangiri. Thunderstorm with lightening is also likely at one or two places over the districts of coastal Odisha, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Angul and Dhenkanal.
On August 16, heavy rain may continue at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur and Bargarh districts.
Heavy rain is likely at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur and Bargarh during the subsequent 24 hours.
