Odisha SRC Sounds Alert Amid Rise In Water Level Of Mahanadi At Mundali

Bhubaneswar: With 5.78 lakh cusec water flowing in the Mahanadi at Mundali, the office of Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) on Friday instructed collectors of 10 districts of Odisha to remain alert.

“Special attention should be given to people residing in low-lying areas of Sambalpur, Sonepur, Nayagarh, Angul, Boudh, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada. Entry to the submerged/submersible, roads culverts, bridges to be restricted. Any untoward incident to be reported immediately,” it said.

The Water Resources department had reported significant increase in flow of water in the Mahanadi at Mundali this morning. While 5.87 lakh cusec of water was flowing at Mundali by 6 am, it dropped 5.78 lakh cusec by 8 am.

Meanwhile, six more sluice gates were opened at Hirakud Dam to release more floodwater following rains in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi.

Currently, floodwater is being released through 14 gates, including nine on the left spillway and five on the right spillway of the reservoir. The water level of the dam stood at 612.25 ft at 6 am against its water-holding capacity of 630 ft. It was releasing 2,86,136 cusec water by 6 am.
