Bhubaneswar: With the completion of student union elections in Odisha, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik congratulated the newly elected representatives across colleges and universities.
While congratulating Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for the victory of its candidates in many campuses, Majhi also lashed out at the previous BJD government accusing it of suspending student union elections for many years for its political interests.
Naveen, while hailing the role of Gen Z and youth, accused the BJP of having attempted to win the student union polls through unjust and unfair means.
Congress, on the other hand, criticised the manner in which campus elections were held with state party president Bhakta Charan Das describing it as a process of selection done in an unfair way.
In a post on X, CM Majhi said his government fulfilled its promise by restoring the democratic voice of students. He alleged that the previous government had kept student union elections suspended to serve its political interests, depriving students of their democratic rights.
The Chief Minister also expressed confidence that the newly elected representatives will uphold the trust of their fellow students and discharge their responsibilities with sincerity and integrity.
He said he hopes they will strengthen democratic values on campuses and contribute meaningfully towards building a Viksit Odisha. Majhi wished the student leaders a bright future and a successful tenure.

Naveen, who is the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Odisha Assembly, said the victory reflects the dedication, unity and strength of Odisha’s GenZ, youth and student community.
The former CM also praised BCJD and BJD leaders for firmly fighting, what he called the BJP government’s conspiracy to win the student council elections through unjust and unfair means.
Patnaik urged everyone to come together to preserve the academic atmosphere in colleges and work for building a bright future for the students.
“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the winning candidates and students in the Student Parliament election. This victory reflects the dedication and unity of Odisha’s #GenZ, youth, and student power. I commend all the leaders of BJD and BCJD who stood firmly against the BJP government’s conspiracy to win the Student Parliament election through injustice and unfair means. Let us all unite to move forward in maintaining the academic environment of the college and shaping a bright future for the students”, he said in the post.

In his reaction, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Charan Das said the student election was not an election; but a selection. In more than 200 colleges, the ruling party turned what should have been an election into a selection, he claimed.
Where elections were being held but the ruling party knew their people could not win, they stopped the elections altogether, Das alleged, adding that where elections took place, they misused college and university principals, vice-chancellors, and others to win.
