Bhubaneswar: Odisha may say goodbye to glass bottles for sale of liquor with the state government seeking to promote use of tetra packs for alcoholic beverages in a bid to reduce environmental hazards.
Sharing this information in the state Assembly on Saturday, Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan said that tetra packs will be allowed to promote safer packaging as part of the revised excise policy. Use of tetra packs will ensure safer handling and disposal of liquor containers across the state.
While answering a question in the House, the Minister said that liquor can now be sold in tetra packs similar to fruit juice packaging under the guidelines laid down by the revised excise policy. The move aims at reducing the use of glass bottles and promote safer, more environment-friendly packaging solutions.
Stating that the policy change is in line with the government’s focus on sustainability, he said the use of tetra packs has been allowed in place of glass bottles as it is considered more conducive to environmental protection.
The government is encouraging all concerned to actively promote the reuse and recycling of glass bottles wherever they continue to be used from an environmental conservation perspective.
