Cyclonic Rain To Lash Odisha For Five Days

Bhubaneswar: A cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal will trigger rainfall in most parts of the state for five days, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast said on Friday.

The cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining coastal Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal now lies over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and south Odisha coast extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting towards the south-west direction.

“Under its influence, light to moderate rain or thundershower will occur at most places in South and many places in North Odisha districts with heavy rainfall at one or two places in Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Kandhamal, Khurda, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur and Sambalpur in the next 24 hours,” duty officer of Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, Sudarshan Mishra told the media.

The following areas will experience rainfall in the state from July 20 to 23:

July 20: Light to moderate rain or thundershower at many places over the districts of South Odisha and North interior Odisha and at a few places over north coastal Odisha with heavy rainfall warning at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Nuapada and Kalahandi.

July 21: Light to moderate rain or thundershower at many places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi and at a few places over the remaining districts of Odisha.

July 22: Light to moderate rain or thundershower at a few places over the districts of south Odisha and at one or two places over the districts of north Odisha with thunderstorm and lightning warning at one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nayagarh and Khurda.

July 23: Light to moderate rain or thundershower at a few places over the districts of south Odisha and north interior Odisha and at one or two places over the districts of north coastal Odisha with thunderstorm and lightning warning at one or two places over the districts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Ganjam and Puri.

Talking about deficit rainfall, Mishra said the state till July 19 has received 26 per cent deficit rainfall. “As against the average rainfall of 405 mm, the state has received 300 mm during the period. Since there has been less rainfall in the state in July, we hope the state will receive better rainfall in August. Though the low-pressure is formed over the Bay of Bengal under the influence of the monsoon trough, there is no adequate rainfall. However, going by the modular study, the state will have normal monsoon activity in August,” he pointed out.

Till 8.30 am on Friday, Gopalpur recorded the highest rainfall of at 93.2 mm followed by Cuttack (13.6), Bhawanipatna (13.3), Bhubaneswar (12.5), Daringbadi (9) and Puri (7.4).
