Dhenkanal: A woman allegedly attempted to set herself on fire on the premises of SP office in Odisha’s Dhenkanal on Saturday over alleged police inaction.
According to sources, she initially approached Town police station over mental harassment by her husband’s cousin but was instead asked to report the matter to Sadar police station. There, she was sent back to the Town station due to jurisdictional issues. Frustrated, she poured petrol on herself at the SP’s office but was quickly stopped and saved by police personnel, who also seized a petrol bottle and matchbox from her.
Dhenkanal SP Abhinav Sonkar later spoke to the woman and assured her of legal action. “I have discussed the matter with the woman and assured her of taking appropriate legal action regarding her complaint,” he told reporters.
Meanwhile, two sub-inspectors (SIs), Utkal Bijay Mohanty of Town police station and Rosalin Minz of Sadar police station, have been suspended for “negligence” in duty.
