Odisha Woman Raises Voice Against Domestic Violence, Takes Back Dowry Items

Boudh: Liza, a young woman of Siddhapur village under Baunsuni police limits in Odisha’s Boudh, is the talk of the town now for her courage in seeking police support against dowry torture and taking back all items gifted by her parents to her in-laws and husband.

She did this recently with the help of Baunsuni police.

According to sources, Liza was married to Raghunath 15 months back. Liza’s parents had given many dowry items at the time of marriage but her in-laws and husband allegedly constantly pressurised her for more dowry. When she objected she was allegedly tortured and locked in a room. She was rescued by some residents of the village and handed over to her parents.

“They first demanded a gold chain and refrigerator from my parents and then asked me to bring Rs 5 lakh from them. When I did not listen to them, I was tortured,” Liza told media.

Liza has further alleged that her brother-in-law also misbehaved with her and when she complained about it to her in-laws, they said she was trying to defame him.

Both Liza and her parents and Raghunath and his parents have filed police complaints against each other. While Liza has alleged that her in-laws tried to kill her, Raghunath has alleged that Liza threatened him that she would get his parents killed.

“The dowry allegations are false. We have visited the police station four to five times and every time we were asked to go back and resolve it among ourselves,” Raghunath told media.
