Ganjam: A 24-year-old worker from Ganjam district stranded in Kuwait has appealed to the government to help him return home.
The matter came to light after Jeelu Prusty, a native of Adapada, posted a video on social media, narrating his ordeal in the Gulf nation and seeking help for his repatriation.
According to sources, Prusty had been working as a pipe fabricator at M/s Heena Enterprises in Mumbai since 2016. The company subsequently engaged him at M/s Al-Sager Company Gen Trad & Cont WLL, Kuwait in 2019.
However, instead of employing him as a pipe fabricator as promised earlier, the Kuwaiti company engaged Prusty for transporting soil.
After working there for eight months, the youth left the job. However, the company did not settle his payment. His passport validity also reportedly ended in November 2019.
“I cannot express how many problems I am facing here. The company authorities are harassing me and the administration is also not good here. I request the government to kindly help me return to my native place,” a visibly distressed Prusty said in the video.
He alleged that he has approached the Indian embassy in Kuwait several times, but no one helped him regarding his repatriation. “I am surviving on the money sent from home as I have no job,” he added.
Ganjam district labour officer, Babu Charan Patra, efforts were on to bring back the youth to Odisha.
“We have intimated the matter to Odisha labour commissioner and he has written to the director, Gulf Division, Ministry of External Affairs and requested to take necessary steps for rescue and safe return of the youth,” Patra said.
“I have also personally talked to the youth and all necessary help will be provided to him,” he added.
