Bhubaneswar: Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha is set to receive two new tigers soon to augment the big cat population, Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia announced on Monday.
The Minister said that the state government is coordinating with the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) to bring the tigers.
Stressing that local community cooperation is crucial for the success of this effort, he said that discussions with villagers are already underway. Without their support, ensuring tiger safety and breeding will remain difficult.
Referring to past initiatives, the Minister recalled that tigress Jamuna and Jeenat were brought to the Similipal Tiger Reserve in Mayurbhanj district to augment the tiger population.
While results so far have been limited, continuous efforts are being made to improve conservation outcomes, he said.
Authorities are now monitoring the existing tigers using GPS collars and camera traps. With the arrival of the new tigers, officials expect a boost in population growth and conservation activities at Debrigarh.
