Bhubaneswar: The Indian team disappointed at the recent World Women’s Team Chess Championship in Spain, losing in the quarterfinals to Kazakhstan.
However, Padmini Rout did India and Odisha proud by clinching the individual Board 1 bronze medal.
The IM and WGM lost just one of her five matches, against China’s accomplished player Hou Yifan. She recorded wins over Ukraine’s Anna Ushenina and Bibisara Assaubayeva (Kazakhstan), and drew with Nino Batsiashvili (Georgia), G. Tokhirjonova (Uzbekistan) and Deimante Daulyte-Cornette – all higher-ranked opponents than the Odisha player.
India finished third in Pool B, behind Georgia and China.
The FIDE team clinched gold with an unbeaten run, overcoming Azerbaijan in the final.
