Bhubaneswar: Efforts are being made to revive ‘Chaki Khela’, a popular sport among Juang tribe of Sourik Anchal, at Sukinda in Jajpur district.
The game is played with one stick and a round-shaped ball (made of sleeper) between two teams, comprising seven to nine players in each team.
‘Chaki Khela’ is not only played at Chingudipal, but also some parts of Dhenkanal and Keonjhar of Odisha.
However, it is on the verge of extinction.
Recognizing the needs of the tribal communities in all areas of its operation, the Tata Steel has been giving due emphasis to nurturing and preserving their rich culture and heritage.
To promote this tribal sport, it has been engaging with the local communities and organising various tournaments in the region.
Taking views of the existing players of Chingudipal gram panchayat, the company has also been promoting this tribal sport in schools and colleges of the region in and around Sukinda and Jajpur.
Recently, Tata Steel facilitated players of the tournaments organised by Young Utkal Club, Kumdibahali.
As many as 62 teams from Keonjhar, Dhenkanal and Jajpur districts participated in the tournament.
The company also hosted an inter-village Chaki tournament at Ardapal village. A total of 20 teams from nearby villages participated.
