Puri: Turtle hatchlings were released into the sea at Konark and Astarang beaches in Puri on Friday.
Sources said forest and wildlife officials released as many as 775 baby turtles in the first phase. Around 62,802 eggs are being incubated at six temporary hatcheries set up by the forest department. The forest department has taken this step to protect the endangered species.
Notably, Konark and Astarang beaches in Puri are the most important sporadic nesting sites for Olive Ridley sea turtles in Odisha after Gahirmatha.
