Omicron In India: Traveller From UK Among 18 New Cases

New Delhi: As many as 18 new Omicron-positive cases were detected in India on Saturday, of which one is a traveller from the UK.

India’s tally shot up to 129.

The foreign returnee, an 18-year-old female, arrived at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport on December 10 and tested positive despite being fully vaccinated with Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, the Karnataka Health department. His genome sequencing revealed presence of Omicron strain.

Maharashtra reported 8 new cases, including 4 in Mumbai, while Kerala detected 4 Omicron cases.

The UK is seeing a steep rise in daily infections, including Omicron, with around 95,000 fresh COVID cases being reported. UK is among 14 countries classified by India as ‘at-risk’ for Omicron.

The UK is among more than a dozen countries on the Union health ministry’s ‘at-risk’ countries for Omicron.

India’s Omicron tally is 110, including 14 in Karnataka. Maharashtra leads with 40 cases, followed by Delhi (22) and Rajasthan (17).
