Sonepur/Deogarh: A man was killed and eight others were injured during Nor’wester-triggered rain and heavy wind in different parts of Sonepur and Deogarh districts on Sunday.
In Sonepur, a man died after lightning struck him while he was walking on the road at Dunguripali village.
The second incident was reported from Deogarh district where at least eight people were injured after tree branches fell on two houses at Dantaribahala village.
The victims were admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Apart from that, several shops at a local weekly market were badly damaged in the storm.
Strong winds, which lasted for nearly an hour, blew away roofs of several thatched houses and uprooted trees and snapped power lines, plunging many areas into darkness.
Meanwhile, the regional meteorological centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) here this evening issued thunderstorm and lightning warning for 12 districts of the state.
The alert has been sounded for Deogarh, Sonepur , Sambalpur, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati, Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Jharsuguda till 8 pm.
