New Delhi: Former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha was on Tuesday named by the Opposition as its candidate for the President polls.
“In the forthcoming Presidential elections, we have decided to elect a common candidate and stop the Modi government from doing further damage. At a subsequent meeting held today we have chosen Yashwant Sinha as our common candidate. We appeal to all political parties to vote for Yashwant Sinha,” said Congress’s communication chief Jairam Ramesh.
Sinha’s name started doing the rounds since Wednesday morning after he tweeted that he was “stepping aside” from the Trinamool to work towards opposition unity. He thanked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the tweet.
Sinha was chosen after NCP chief Sharad Pawar, NC chief Farooq Abdullah and Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi declined to run for the post. They have all extended support to Sinha’s candidature.
