From surviving the streets of Old Delhi to earning acclaim on the global stage, Sajda Pathan’s inspiring journey mirrors the poignant narrative of Anuja. In this Oscar-nominated short film, she delivers a heartfelt performance that sheds light on critical issues like child labour and girls’ education, making her story as impactful as the film itself.

Sajda’s story is one of resilience and transformation. Growing up in the slums of Old Delhi, she and her older sister were left to fend for themselves after being abandoned by their parents. Living on the streets, Sajda spent her days begging outside a Hanuman temple until social workers from Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT) intervened.

SBT introduced Sajda to education through their Yamuna Bazaar center. Today, she resides at their Day Care Center, where she continues to rebuild her life and career. Sajda’s success is intertwined with the mission of SBT, which was founded in 1988 using proceeds from Mira Nair’s Oscar-nominated film Salaam Bombay. The organization co-produced Anuja alongside Shine Global and Krushan Naik Films.

Early Life and Struggles

Born into a family struggling with poverty, Sajda’s childhood was far from easy. Due to financial difficulties, she was forced to work as a child laborer to support her family. Despite the hardships, Sajda never let her circumstances define her. She dreamed of a better life and yearned to pursue her passion for acting.

Turning Point

Sajda’s life took a positive turn when her talent was noticed by individuals who believed in her potential. With their encouragement and support, she began to explore opportunities in acting. She attended auditions, learned the craft, and gradually built her confidence.

Rise to Success

Through perseverance and hard work, Sajda landed her first acting role, which marked the beginning of her journey in the entertainment industry. Her performances earned praise for their authenticity and depth, and she quickly gained recognition for her talent. Today, she is not just an accomplished actor but also a symbol of hope for many.

Advocacy and Inspiration

Sajda now uses her platform to raise awareness about child labor and the importance of education and opportunities for underprivileged children. She serves as an inspiration for those facing adversity, proving that determination and talent can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.

A Film with a Purpose

Anuja is Sajda’s second cinematic venture, following her role in the French film The Braid (La Tresse) by Laetitia Colombani, which explored the intertwined lives of women across India, Italy, and Canada.

In Anuja, the spotlight falls on pressing issues such as child labor and girls’ education. The film sheds light on alarming statistics, including the fact that 1 in 10 children worldwide are engaged in child labor, and 129 million girls remain out of school. Through the poignant story of two sisters striving for happiness and opportunity in a world that often sidelines them, Anuja delivers a message that is both heart-wrenching and hopeful.

This Oscar nomination not only celebrates cinematic excellence but also brings global attention to urgent social issues, making Anuja a beacon of inspiration and advocacy.
