Amritsar: A large group of armed men allegedly laid siege to a residence in Akalgarh Dhapian village, under Amritsar’s Jandiala police limits, before opening fire and assaulting people present at the spot.
The confrontation, said to have grown out of a longstanding dispute between two sides, left Sandeep Singh with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was also reportedly hurt by sharp-edged weapons and was taken to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar for medical care.
According to Vishal Singh, a relative of the injured man, the attackers reached the house in overwhelming numbers and carried out what the family described as a planned assault. He alleged that between 100 and 150 people were involved, arriving with pistols, 12-bore guns, kirpans and datars. The family further claimed that six or seven people were injured amid the firing and commotion.
Vishal Singh said the two factions had been locked in an old rivalry. He also alleged that his family cultivated roughly 50 to 70 acres on lease in the village, and named Maninder, Gurmukh and Kuki from the Tarn Taran/Tarapur belt, along with Akash and several unidentified men, as being behind the attack. These names and allegations have not yet been independently established by police, as reported by NDTV.
Police Begin Inquiry
Officer Harpal Singh, who visited the hospital along with his team and village panchayat representatives, said the violence occurred between “1.30 pm and 2 pm.” He confirmed that a clash had broken out between two groups and that gunfire was reported during the confrontation.
The officer said Sandeep had suffered a bullet injury to his leg, along with wounds caused by a sharp-edged weapon. Police are now recording statements from the injured and from members of the victim’s family. An FIR is expected to be registered under applicable provisions once those statements have been taken.
Harpal Singh said the number of rounds fired and the recovery of empty cartridges from the location would be examined as part of the investigation. Police teams are inspecting the scene and gathering evidence to reconstruct what happened.
He assured that “strict legal action would be taken against everyone found involved in the attack and that no accused would be spared.” The scale of the alleged assault and the use of firearms in daylight have caused concern among residents, though several central claims remain subject to verification.
