Mumbai: Almost two-and-a-half months after a freak injury while taking a catch in the Sydney ODI against Australia led to hospitalisation, Shreyas Iyer is back in Team India’s ODI squad for the three-match home series against New Zealand. However, Iyer’s selection is subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence.
Shreyas suffered a severe spleen laceration with internal bleeding on October 25, and is yet to return to competitive cricket.
Shubman Gill, who missed the home series against South Africa due to a neck spasm that picked up during the Kolkata Test in November, also returned to the ODI fold as captain.
Pacer Mohammed Siraj, too, made the cut after being overlooked for the South Africa series.
Iyer, Gill and Siraj replaced Tilak Varma, Dhruv Jurel and Ruturaj Gaikwad from the squad that won 2-1 against South Africa.
Iyer apart, most eyes will be on veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who only play the ODI format in international cricket now. Kohli was in red-hot form and Rohit was among runs, too, against South Africa in November-December.
