Rourkela: Panic has gripped Rourkela as more than 200 people have been injured by stray dog bites in the past three days.
Doctors at Rourkela Government Hospital said 230 patients were treated after being bitten by stray and rabid dogs on Sunday and Monday. Ten more injured came to the hospital on Tuesday, they added.
According to locals, most of the attacks were reported from Indira Park, Fertiliser Township, Jagda, Jhirpani, Koel Nagar, Udit Nagar, Sector-6 and Sector-8 areas in the Steel City.
They alleged that the authorities of Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) and Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) were aware of these incidents, but they are unwilling to take catch and kill the dogs by pleading that the Protection of Animal Act forbade them from doing so.
Members of the Rourkela Bar Association said that the situation has gone to such extent that parents are not sending their children to schools and women are afraid to step out of their houses.
