Over 700 Students Of IIT-Madras To Be Tested For COVID-19

Chennai: Another 79 residents of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, taking the total to 183.

Tamil Nadu Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan warned other colleges to comply with COVID-19 norms and said aggressive testing will be conducted in other colleges such as Anna University as well.

Blaming the spread of the disease in IIT-Madras on not wearing masks and following safety instructions, he said at present more than 700 students of the institute are being tested. “People think COVI-19 positive cases have come down, and hence no need to wear masks or maintain social distance. This is happening at marriage halls, eateries, etc,” he said.

“Students need to realise the seriousness of the disease. Sitting together without social distancing, sharing food in a mess are primary reasons for the spread of COVID-19. We will initiate action against the management for letting these things happen. We cannot keep requesting them to follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). We are issuing a warning through this press meet,” he told The Indian Express.

A “100 per cent saturation approach” will be undertaken in which a second round of testing will be conducted in 10 days to eradicate the danger completely. This strategy was applied at the Koyembedu market and other areas in the city.
