Over Rs 1 Cr Lost To Cyber Fraud In July; Elderly In Bhubaneswar Warned About Fraudsters Taking House On Rent

Bhubaneswar: With over Rs 1.1 crore lost due to cybercrime, including Rs 55.68 lakh from Bhubaneswar, in July, the Twin City Commissionerate Police on Monday issued an advisory especially for the senior citizens.

Commissioner of Police Soumendra Priyadarshi said that the cyber fraudsters are targeting senior citizens on the pretext of taking houses on rent.

“They collect personal information of the senior citizens on the pretext of renting a house and siphon off money from their account. We request the senior citizens to stay away from strangers and not share any personal information with them,” Priyadarshi said.

In July, 110 unified payments interface (UPI) and 76 credit card frauds amounting to Rs 55.68 lakh were reported in Bhubaneswar. The cyber cell managed to retrieved Rs 8.56 lakh, a press release said.

The cyber cell received 370 complaints related to online fraud in July, 229 in June, 196 in May and 220 in April.

Online frauds to the tune of Rs 83 lakh were reported in June and Rs 70.78 lakh in May while city denizens lost Rs 74 lakh to cybercriminals in April.

In February, Odisha had reported more than Rs 1.4 crore cyber fraud.
