Koraput: Police have seized more than two quintal of ganja and arrested two brothers from Uttar Pradesh for smuggling it in Odisha’s Koraput district.
According to sources, Baipariguda police was informed about the smuggling of ganja from Dasmantpur on Saturday morning. On the direction of its IIC Dipanjali Pradhan, a police team, led by ASI Dhiren Barik went for patrolling.
During the patrolling at Kurulugad bridge, around 4 km from the police station, they saw a truck, bearing registration number of Uttar Pradesh, coming from Dasmantpur. They stopped it on suspicion and checked it.
The police team found ganja packed in several polythene sacks during checking inside the truck. They seized the contraband and detained two persons travelling in the truck.
The seized ganja weighed 2.73 quintal. The two persons, going in the truck, were identified as Deepak Kumar and Mandeep Kumar of Makarandpur village in Farizabad district of Uttar Pradesh.
During questioning, the two persons, who are brothers, admitted that they had procured the ganja from another person and were transporting it for sale in their home state. The police arrested them and registered a case. They have also started investigation to trace the person from whom the contraband was procured.
