Islamabad: Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has blamed Bollywood for the rise in sex crimes.
“World history tells that when you increase vulgarity in society, two things happen: sex crimes increase and the family system breaks down,” Imran said during a TV interview. “New Delhi too has become the ‘rape capital’ of the world due to obscenity in Bollywood. Compare the movies made in India 40 years ago to the movies being made now. Look at the impact of those movies,” he added.
Imran said this in reaction to the widespread protests in Pakistan over the gang-rape of a woman in front of her two children on a highway near Lahore last week.
The Pakistani PM declared that the “highway gang-rape had shaken the entire nation because the victim could have been anyone’s sister or daughter”, according to a report in Dawn newspaper.
Calling for exemplary punishment for rapists, Imran said, “They should be hanged at the roadside”.
He, however, conceded that the option of public hanging would not be “internationally acceptable”.
Imran said another option was to “chemically or surgically castrate rapists” so they are unable to commit such crimes in future.
