Berhampur: At least four people, including a local Panchayat Samiti member, were critically injured in a violent clash that broke out during a wedding celebration at a village in Purushottampur area of Odisha’s Ganjam district.
As per information, the clash took place at Kushapur village under the jurisdiction of Purushottampur Police Station on Friday, prompting swift intervention by the police.
Sources said some drunk youths of a wedding party were throwing bricks and stones at houses when the procession passed through the village late on Friday night. The villagers told them to celebrate peacefully which irked the youths. Thereafter, 10-12 youths armed with iron rods and swords barged into houses of the villagers who protested and launched murderous attacks on them. Bagala Panchayat Samiti member Prakash Chandra Nahak was among those attacked.
The injured were rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, where doctors confirmed their condition as critical.
Families of the victims expressed anguish over the brutality of the assault, demanding immediate justice and stronger preventive measures against such violent outbreaks during public gatherings.
Police officials stated that a case has been registered and investigations are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.
