Patnagarh Parcel Blast: Courier Owner, Staff Identify Punjilal Meher

Bolangir: The Crime Branch Special Investigation Team (SIT) had a major breakthrough in the much-talked-about parcel gift blast case after the owner and staff of two courier companies of Raipur identified the prime accused Punjilal Meher during a test identification (TI) parade at the sub-jail at Patnagarh in Odisha’s Bolangir district on Tuesday.
Sources said the Patnagarh SDJM court on May 11 had summoned Harbinder Singh Saluja, owner of the Skyking Courier and a lady staff of the DTDC Courier of Raipur to remain present at the Patnagarh sub-jail on May 14.

Acting on the directive of the court, the duo had arrived at the sub-jail on Tuesday where the SIT conducted the IT parade of Punjilal in presence of a local magistrate. During the TI parade, the duo identified Punjilal.

Prior to the TI parade, a team of Crime Branch police from Bolangir had visited Patnagarh on Tuesday where it had interrogated some witnesses and others who were indirectly involved in the incident, the sources added.

As per the earlier statement by the Crime Branch IG, Arun Bothra, Punjilal had gone to Kantabanjhi railway station on his Bullet motorcycle from Patnagarh on February 15. There he had boarded a train to Raipur.

After arriving in Raipur, he had gone to the DTDC Courier to book the parcel. But he came back as the courier staff asked him to show his identity card. Later, he hired an auto-rickshaw and went to the Skyking Courier where he managed to book the parcel through the auto-rickshaw driver by offering him extra money.

The prime accused, during his second phase remand, had shown a demo on his entire plan to the SIT.

After the end of his second phase remand, Punjilal was sent to the Patnagarh sub-jail as per the order of the SDJM court as the SIT did not apply the court to take him on further remand.
