New Delhi: Train fares will be revised from July 1, 2025, the Ministry of Railways has informed. While suburban and short journey fares of passenger trains (up to 500 km) will remain unchanged, those travelling long-distance in mail/express trains – either AC or non-AC – will have to pay slightly more than what they do now.

The fare increase will be on the basis of the number of km travelled, the ministry has informed.

Those travelling ordinary second class to destinations beyond 500 km will be charged half a paise extra per km. Hence, passengers will have to pay Rs 2.50 extra for a journey of 1,000 km. They will only be paying additional fare for 500 km as the first 500 km is exempt for this class of travel.

Those travelling by mail/express (non-AC class) trains beyond 500 km will have to pay 1 paise more per km. A passenger travelling on such trains for 1,000 km will be charged Rs 10 extra. Here the 500 km exemption will not come into effect.

For air-conditioned travel, passengers will pay two paise extra per km. This means that those travelling by AC Chair Car, AC 3-Tier, 2-Tier, or 1st Class AC for 1,000 km will pay Rs 20 extra per ticket.

This is only for the basic fare, officials have clarified. Other surcharges, reservation charges and taxes will apply accordingly.

“Fares have been revised after a long time. Passenger fares continue to remain heavily subsidised under Indian Railways and this minor increase will not help in reducing the huge gap between expenditure and earnings. It will help to ensure that the gap doesn’t expand by too much as expenditure goes up,” an official said.
