Angul: In an effort to prevent forest fires during the peak summer season, the administration in Odisha’s Angul has announced a comprehensive ban on picnics, social gatherings, and similar activities in all forest areas in the district.
The restrictions will come into effect from March 1 and remain in force until the arrival of the monsoon rains in the state, official sources said on Saturday.
The aim is to minimise human-induced fire risks, as dry vegetation, high temperatures, and strong winds during summer months make forests highly vulnerable.
With its significant forest cover, Angul district has witnessed forest fire incidents in past years, prompting the administration to undertake timely intervention.
As per the order, there will be complete prohibition on organising picnics, social gatherings, camping, or any group activities in protected forests, restricted zones, and rural forest areas.
The administration also restricted carrying or using flammable materials such as matches, lighters, oils, or any other fire-starting items into these forest zones. No open fires, bonfires, or use of incendiary materials will be permitted under any circumstances.
Officials said that the restrictions will apply to all reserved forests, protected forests, and village forests under the Angul Forest Division.
The notification warned that violators would face strict action under the Odisha Forest Act, 1972; the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972; and the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
The administration has emphasised that these measures are essential to safeguard the district’s biodiversity, prevent loss of wildlife habitat, and protect adjoining human settlements from fire spread.
