Cuttack: The Orissa High Court on Friday directed Berhampur Superintendent of Police (SP) Saravana Vivek M to appear before it in person and explain about the statement made by him regarding lawyer Pitabas Panda murder case.
The HC directed the police officer to appear personally before it on November 11 at 10.30 am in connection with the statement he made regarding a pending election petition.
The development comes after the remarks of the SP triggered an outrage, as the case relating to the election petition is still under judicial consideration.
The HC noted that the SP, in his written explanation submitted to the Registrar General in compliance with its October 31 order, had reportedly acknowledged having spoken to the media about the ongoing case.
Taking note of this admission, the High Court asked the SP to submit a written affidavit by November 10, explaining his comments and clarifying his position.
The court will decide on November 11 whether to initiate contempt of court proceedings against him for his public statement.
The controversy began after the Berhampur SP reportedly told the media that an election-related case against a sitting MLA was the primary motive behind the murder of advocate Pitabas Panda.
The SP’s comment was viewed as prejudicial and in violation of legal propriety, drawing criticism from the legal fraternity and the victim’s family.
